The next generation of the popular Porsche Cayenne SUV enters its next generation in the 2018 model year. It’s been seen in testing, and while it’s a new generation, what we’ve seen so far suggests that the new SUV that will be available to the Westford and Nashua customers of Porsche of Nashua some time in 2017 will look much the same as the current model year while incorporating some new technology and subtle changes to its exterior.

To start with, the 2018 Porsche Cayenne will have a roof line that’s lower and longer. The other change comes at the tail end of that roof line: the roof will reportedly terminate in an active spoiler that’s designed to improve the already excellent handling on the Porsche Cayenne.

Other changes are due under the hood. The core selection of engines will consist of new power plants that include a turbocharged 2.9 liter V6 engine, and two new V8 engines that displace 3.6 and 4.0 liters. The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system will be expanded at the cost of some knobs and buttons, gaining a larger screen that’s said to measure 12 to 13 inches. More details are expected to come into focus as the release date gets closer.

Porsche faces something of a high-wire act with the Cayenne, in much the same way they do whenever the time comes to make changes to their iconic Porsche 911. The Cayenne doesn’t yet have decades of history behind it, but in both cases certain expectations have been set and certain standards have to be met. That may go some way to explaining a relatively conservative approach with this redesign.

The Porsche Cayenne is already a formidable SUV, and its success has bankrolled many other innovations for Porsche since it was introduced.
