Just how good is the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman S? You could ask any New England Porsche fan, or those of us at Porsche of Nashua. You can also get a hint comes from a recent article in Autocar. That magazine’s source says that the S can lap the legendary Nurburgring as quickly as the current-generation GT4 as long as it’s shod with the tires from the GT4.

Given that Porsche isn’t in the habit of letting “good enough” be good enough, well-sourced speculation is rampant that there’ll be a next-generation GT4 for model year 2018. What would be different about this new Porsche car?

The turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the current Porsche 718 models has proven to be more than capable. In fact, it’s one of the best engines to come out of Porsche AG in recent years. However, the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 would get a boost in terms of both displacement and horsepower. A naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter flat six engine — possibly carried over from the Porsche 911R — would take the place of the 2.0-liter turbocharged flat four for this model.

There will be some other changes, including new suspension and racing-oriented tires for better handling and traction. The aerodynamics will also be subtly different, including a new rear diffuser, a redesigned spoiler, and lower profile for more downforce.

The new powerplant can be expected to produce somewhere north of 400 horsepower, more than offsetting the weight difference between it and the lighter turbo four. Combine that with the lower drag coefficient, better grip, and more responsive handling, and it should be clear that the 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 will be a beast on and off the track.
